Malappuram: A man has been booked in Kerala’s Malappuram district for allegedly pronouncing talaq over the phone to divorce his wife, along with charges of assaulting her and demanding dowry, police said on Saturday.

The Kalpakanchery police registered a case against Shahul Hameed, a native of Edakkulam, after his wife, a 21-year-old woman from Naduvattam, filed a complaint. She alleged that her husband had been subjecting her to physical and mental torture for some time, pressuring her to provide more dowry.

According to the complaint, Hameed recently divorced her over a phone conversation in the presence of his mother. The police have booked him under Section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, which criminalizes the practice of instant triple talaq. Additionally, he faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 498A, which pertains to cruelty against a married woman by her husband or his relatives.

Authorities said Hameed has been summoned for questioning, and further action will be taken based on the investigation. The couple was married in 2021.
