Thiruvananthapuram: In Kerala’s Sharon Raj murder case, which shook the public conscience, the sessions court at Neyyattinkara in the state capital sentenced convict number one Greeshma to death and her maternal uncle and co-convict Nirmalakumaran Nair to three years. The 24-year-old convict, Greeshma, was the murdered youth Sharon Raj’s girlfriend, and he was killed after he refused to stop his relationship with her. The incident related to the case happened in 2022.

In a 586-page verdict, the court detailed the roles of the accused in the murder. It noted that Sharon loved Greeshma even on his deathbed and did not want her to be punished. She meanwhile attempted to kill them while the affair between them was going on.

The court said that Greeshma invited Sharon to her house on the pretext of getting into a physical session. However, Sharon sensed something wrong, and that is why he filmed a video, the verdict said.

The court further noted that Sharon was hospitalised for 11 days, with his internal organs rotting, and he couldn’t even drink water during these days towards his death. Greeshma betrayed his trust, and the murder was without provocation. There was no evidence confirming that Sharon committed physical violence at her, the court said.

Further, the court noted that Greeshma’s tactic of holding on to her claims until the last moment did not work. The case churned out the wrong message that even a loved one cannot be trusted. The court asserted that her age, as well as the argument that she was not involved in the crime earlier, cannot be taken into account.

The court also noted that she had attempted to kill Sharon even before. The attempt to murder charge against Greeshma was proven, and whether Sharon complained or not wasn’t relevant before the court, it added.

It was on Friday, January 17, Greeshma and the third accused, , Nirmalakumaran Nair, were found guilty by the court. However, it couldn’t find evidence against Greeshma’s mother, Sindhu and acquitted her. The court found Greeshma guilty of murder, causing hurt by means of poison, abduction with intent to murder and providing false information about a crime. When both Sindhu and Nirmalakumaran Nair were accused of destruction of evidence, the court couldn’t establish the case against the former. Nirmalakumaran Nair is expected to get bail on the day, Onmanorama reported. D Shilpa IPS, who probed the case, said that though there were no eyewitnesses, the probe team had digital and circumstantial evidence to prove the case. The officer added that Greeshma admitted to the crime when questioned, too. Sharon Raj, a 23-year-old radiology student, was poisoned by the first convict and Sharon’s former girlfriend, Greeshma. This was after he refused to end his relationship with her. The crime occurred when Sharon visited Greeshma at her home in Ramavarmanchirai in Kanyakumari. She fed him an Ayurvedic decoction laced with pesticide, after which he fell ill and was hospitalised. Though he recovered first, he became ill again and succumbed to organ failure on October 25.
