Kerala records over 17,000 new  COVID cases with 17.73% TPR, on Onam day

Kerala has reported 17,106 new Covid-19 cases on Onam day. The test positivity rate in the state is now 17.73%.

Kerala has been consistently reporting the highest number of daily cases in the country for the past few weeks. People were seen at crowded markets and other outdoor venues for shopping ahead of the festival. Several reports of people showing up without following Covid-19 protocols like social distancing and wearing face masks were made in the state.

The number of new Covid-19 cases has been on the rise in the days ahead of Onam as well. On Friday, 20,224 new cases and a TPR of 16.94% were reported. On Thursday, 21,116 new cases and a TPR of 16.15% were reported. Kerala currently has 1,78,462 active cases.

Kerala government had relaxed Covid-19 restrictions for the past one week on account of Independence Day and Onam. Both weekends were exempted from the Sunday lockdown the state has been observing for months.

Authorities had been allowing selective opening of shops on the basis of the TPR of the area, which was severelyKerala Records Over 17,000 Covid-19 Cases with 17.73% Test Positivity Rate criticised as it was affecting small-scale traders and businessmen, especially on festival season.
