Thiruvananthapuram: Following the avowal by the CPI (M) Kerala chief of looking for all the means of way to remove the Kerala Governor Mohammed Arif Khan from holding the post of Chancellor of universities in the state, the Left government has decided to bring in an ordinance a his regard in the Assembly.

The rift between the Governor and the State government has escalated over time because of which both sides are engaging in overt confrontation with each other.

An amendment in the University Act to remove the Governor as the Chancellor of all universities in the State is being considered by the Cabinet through the promulgation of an ordinance.

The State government is said to be weighing in the status of other states, including BJP-ruled states where Governors are not the ex-officio chancellor of the universities. Besides, the Kerala State University Law Reforms Commission has recommended that the state government can decide whether the Governor is to be maintained as ex-officio chancellor of the universities.

Making the way easier, the Commission report further stated that in no way the State government is compelled to retain the Governor's status as the Chancellor.

Last week, CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan stated that the government would go to any extent in the fight against the Governor.

Even though the process of introducing a bill to remove the Governor as the Chancellor, it is the Governor who is the signing authority of the ordinance.
