CPI(M) to begin three-day review of Kerala poll defeat

Kozhikode: The CPI(M)’s extended Kerala State Committee will begin a three-day meeting in Kozhikode on Sunday to assess the party’s performance in the recent Assembly elections and chart a course for organisational recovery.
CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby will inaugurate the meeting at the AKG Auditorium at the party’s district committee office.
The deliberations will focus on the political, ideological and organisational factors that led to the party’s major electoral setback. The leadership is also expected to discuss measures to revive the party’s grassroots network and rebuild its connection with voters.
The review is likely to go beyond the immediate causes of the defeat and examine deeper shortcomings in the party’s functioning. Key issues expected to come up include political messaging, campaign planning, coordination among organisational units and the party’s understanding of changing public expectations.
The CPI(M) may also consider steps to improve communication between its leadership, grassroots units and the wider public.
A total of 307 delegates will attend the meeting. Kerala-based Politburo members M.A. Baby, Pinarayi Vijayan, M.V. Govindan and A. Vijayaraghavan are scheduled to participate.
Five other Politburo members — K. Balakrishnan, B.V. Raghavulu, Ashok Dhawale, Viju Krishnan and U. Vasuki — will attend as observers.
Members of the Central Committee from Kerala, the State Secretariat and State Committee, district secretariat members and office-bearers of affiliated organisations will also take part in the discussions.
This year, the party departed from its usual method of conducting an election review. Instead of beginning with an assessment prepared by the State Committee, the CPI(M) first sought feedback from organisational units at various levels after the election results were announced.
It also collected views directly from members of the public to assess their perception of the party’s performance and identify the reasons for its defeat.
The feedback, along with internal discussions and guidelines issued by the Central Committee, was incorporated into the review report. The State Committee later examined and approved the document before circulating it among party units for further discussion.
The final report and the feedback received from the organisational units will form the basis of the three-day meeting in Kozhikode.
