Thiruvananthapuram: In Kerala, CPI(M) leader and MLA from Wayanad's Mananthavady, OR Kelu, was sworn in as the new Minister for SC/ST and Backward Classes on Sunday by Governor Arif Mohammed Khan. Kelu became the state's first tribal leader from CPI(M) to become a member of the state council of ministers, The News Minute reported.

The oath ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, along with his cabinet ministers, Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan and IUML MLA PK Kunhalikutty.

Kelu is a two-time MLA representing Mananthavady, and he was assented to the minister's chair after incumbent K Radhakrishnan, who managed the portfolio, resigned after he was elected to Lok Sabha from Alathur in Palakkad.

However, the portfolios Devasoms and Parliamentary Affairs, which Radhakrishnan managed, were transferred to VN Vasavan and MB Rajesh, respectively, which was criticized by the opposition Congress and BJP.

After swearing in, he said that he was pleased with the presence of the opposition at the event. He said that they will work together to resolve the issue of wild animal attacks in Wayanad and will bring a medical college to the district.

Kelu defeated Congress leader PK Jayalekshmi in 2016 and 2021. Jayalekshmi was a minister in the Oommen Chandy government during 2011-16. Kelu has a strong base in his seat since he started political activism from the grassroots. His father, who was present at the swearing-in ceremony, wished Kelu best wishes and expressed hope that he would do right by everyone.
