Complaint filed after newborn’s arm fractured at Kozhikode Medical College
text_fieldsKozhikode: The parents of a newborn baby have filed a medical negligence complaint against the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode after discovering that their child's right arm had been fractured during delivery.
According to police, the parents have submitted complaints to both the hospital's medical superintendent and law enforcement authorities, alleging that the injury occurred due to negligence during the baby's delivery on May 14.
The complaint has been forwarded for a preliminary inquiry by both the police and hospital authorities.
The parents alleged that hospital staff did not inform them that the baby's arm had been broken during childbirth. Instead, they claimed, the newborn was taken directly to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and was later handed over to them with a cast already placed on the injured arm.
According to the complaint, doctors informed them that the baby weighed 3.5 kilograms at birth and that force had to be applied during the delivery process, resulting in the fracture.
The parents further alleged that the cast came off the day after the baby was discharged to them and that the infant's arm subsequently turned blue. Despite informing the concerned doctors about the development, they claimed that no medical professional came to examine the child.
Following the incident, the newborn was shifted to a private hospital for further treatment.
Hospital authorities have denied allegations of medical negligence. They stated that such injuries can occasionally occur during the delivery of larger babies and maintained that there was no lapse in medical care.
The matter is currently under preliminary investigation.
