Accused in 127 criminal cases; Memorandum to President opposing Vellappally’s Padma award
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: A memorandum has been submitted to the President demanding that the Union government withdraw its decision to confer the Padma Bhushan on Vellappally Natesan, who had earlier publicly derided the Padma awards.
The petition points out that Vellappally has been named as an accused in 127 criminal cases related to microfinance transactions.
It notes that in 21 of these cases, the proceedings had reached the stage of filing charge sheets when the decision to award him one of the nation’s highest civilian honours was taken, Mathrubhumi reported.
According to the memorandum submitted by the Save University Campaign Committee, conferring the Padma Bhushan under such circumstances amounts to a grave disrespect to those who have previously received the award.
