3 dental students drown in river near Kothamangalam while bathing

Kochi: Three students of a private dental college drowned while bathing in a river at Vadattupara near Kothamangalam on Sunday, police said.
The deceased have been identified as Biyon from Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district, Athul from Kottayam, and Hareesh from Thiruvananthapuram. All three were students of Mar Baselios Dental College.
According to police, a group of nine students reached Palavanpady in Vadattupara around noon. Later, they entered the river for bathing.
During the bath, Biyon, Athul and Hareesh were caught in a strong current and drowned, officials said.
The remaining members of the group alerted local residents, who immediately began a search operation. Personnel from the police and the Fire and Rescue Services department soon joined the rescue efforts.
The three students were recovered around 2.15 pm and rushed to a hospital in Kothamangalam, where doctors declared them dead.
Police said a case of unnatural death has been registered by Kuttampuzha Police and an investigation has been initiated.
The bodies will be handed over to the families after postmortem examination scheduled for Monday.
