Stalled teaching recruitment a blow to jobseekers

Thiruvanathapuram: Financial department’s austerity measures have got recruitments to teaching positions in ‘lockdown’.  

The latest orders might stop creating new teaching positions in schools and colleges.

The weightage for one hour of teaching in government colleges, usually treated as one and a half hours, has been cancelled.

Alongside, the director of college education has asked college principals to restructure the workload of teachers in colleges.

With the cancelling of PG weightage, numerous college teachers would become redundant.

No positions have yet been created in the newly allotted courses. With implementing PG weighatage, redundant teachers can be shifted to newly created courses.

This could mean no appointment in near future from PSC rank list for assistant professors in 22 subjects.

The order revoking PG weightage in aided colleges was issued on April1.  This is against the May 9, 2018 order that ensured continuance of PG Weightage.

In case of more than 16 hours of extra workload, one more teaching position can be created; and for 9 or more hours of workload, second position can be created, the order said.

Based on this, hundreds of appointments have been made in aided colleges.

Owing to opposition from financial department, the PG weigthtge was cancelled with the April 1 order.

16 hours workload has been made compulsory in all positions, in retrospective effect from May 1, 2018, putting all those sought appointment in colleges in the past two years in crisis.

Over the years, more than 2000 positions in aided colleges would cease to exist.

With restructuring of workload, even the existing teachers would become redundant without having to recruit to positions left vacant from retirements.

This would be the same story in government colleges as well.
