Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Motor Vehicle department recommended the state government that traffic fines could be reduced from within the ambit of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Transport Commissioner submitted a report regarding this to the government. MV dept is not in favour of continuing with old rates of fines.

In the face of increasing vehicle accidents, fines should be hiked; however, the fines recommended by the Centre is not practical.

The MV dept has suggested the government to make 50 percent cut on the fines recommended by the Centre. The report, however, seeks to know whether the move would get legal validity.

The government would hand over the commissioner’s report to legal department.

The legal advice the government had received earlier said it would not be possible to fix fines at lower rates than were decided by the Centre.

However, the Secretary of legal department has informed the government that the state could fix fines on its own.
