Malayalam to be allowed in PSC exams: accord reached in principle

Thiruvananthapuram: The hunger strike by Aikya Malayalam Prasthanam (United Malayalam Movement)  going on for the last several days,  looks like heading to a successful end with an understanding reached between the government and  Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) to conduct the examinations of in Malayalam also.  

At a meeting on Monday between the chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Chairman of PSC, Zakir Hussain,  the latter is reported to have informed that PSC had no objection to conducting exams in Malayalam.  Thus, a decision in principle has been reached  to allow Malayalam as a medium of exams including that of Kerala Administrative Service (KAS) which is scheduled to be held shortly for the first time.

However,  the nitty gritty of conducting exams in the state's local language will be decided through discussion in due course.   A meeting of vice chancellors of all universities in the state to this end will be called shortly.  The chairman also said that a panel will be assigned the task of working out the modalities.

However,  for now the agitation committee has taken the stance that the strike will continue until an official intimation about the decision has been  received.  The hunger strike started on 29 August at the entrance of PSC headquarters.
