Thiruvananthapuram:  At a time when road accidents involving two-wheelers are rising alarmingly in the state, the Transport Department has directed the State Transport Commissioner and State Police Chief to ensure pillion riders in two-wheelers are wearing helmets; also, the directive made compulsory seat belts for travellers in rear seats of cars.

In a letter to the State Transport Commissioner and the State Police Chief, K.R. Jyothilal, Principal Secretary, Transport, asked Kerala to comply with the Supreme Court’s direction.

He made it clear that no insurance company would be able to pay any compensation to those who violate the rules.

The head of Kerala’s two law enforcing agencies were thus directed to ‘strictly check’ violations using the enforcement team of the Motor Vehicles Department and the police.
