Damage caused by floods to cost Rs 40,000 Cr
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: Floods in Kerala have caused an estimated Rs. 40,000 crore worth of damages. According to the criteria of the Centre, the state will get only Rs. 4,796.35 crore as compensation. The state has handed over the memorandum to release the amount.
A request to allocate more funds as a special package for the state will be submitted after assessing the exact damage. Destruction of houses has caused the most damage. As per the Central Government's norms, the state will get Rs. 2,792 crores for completely and partially destroyed houses. The Centre has been requested to release Rs. 214 crores for agriculture and land, 73 crores on behalf of subsidised products including fertilizers, 48 crores for animal rearing, one and a half crore for fishing, five crores for bridges, 95.38 crores for roads and 536 crores for irrigation.
The state has requested Rs. 13 crores for the dependents of those who died during the floods. Rs. 271 crores has been requested for rescue activities and a 240 crores for operation of rehabilitation centres, 55 crores to clean the houses and shops were also asked. Disaster Management Authority consolidated the estimates prepared by respective departments and prepared the memorandum. It will take time to assess the real damage caused. Till the date, around Rs. 1,000 crore has been released by the Centre at different times under different heads.
