Alappuzha: Sree Narayana Darma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam leader Vellapally Natesan 'equidistance' stand in Chengannur bypoll, has landed all the three major parties in a state of relief. The parties have started efforts to ensure that the Ezhava community will cast their votes in favour of them.

In a press conference held at his residence in Kanichukulangara on Wednesday morning, Vellapally Natesan announced that he has directed the unions at Mavelikkara and Chengannur to vote for those who favour and cooperate with the community.

Ezhava community has around 50,000 votes in the constituency. Majority of the lowest ranks of the community are in CPM and CPI. The upper section of the community favours Congress. A section of the community has landed in BJP quarters after the formation of BDJS. However, as the alliance fractured, the rank and file have largely parted their ways with BJP.

As Vellapally has declared an equidistance policy, parties are relieved and hopeful. Hence, state leaders of the three parties reached SNDP Chengannur Union office and held talks with the Yogam leaders. BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan was the first to arrive. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan followed and spent much time at the office. Both the leaders sought support for their candidates. KPCC president MM Hassan also reached the union office on Wednesday.
