Northern districts witness more admissions in govt schools
text_fieldsMalappuram: Priliminary figures show that Save Public Education campaigns had more response in four northern districts than those to south of them.
According to the figures available on the sixth working day, government schools in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Kannur districts have higher number of students who joined this academic year. 87,006 new students got enrolled in classes 1 to 10 in this academic year.
As 1.86 lakh students got enrolled in the government schools across the state, the institutions in the four northern districts claim the larger share in it.
Among districts, the highest increase in student admission is in Malappuram. 32,964 students enrolled in classes 1 to 10. 20,043 students were enrolled in Kozhikode district, which stands second in terms of the number of admissions. In Palakkad and Kannur districts, 17,197 and 16, 802 students got enrolled respectively.
10,078 students joined newly in the first standard in government schools. Half of these are in Malappuram districts. 5009 students joined first standard in the government schools of the district.
Malappuram district has also the most number of students (6.2 lakh), studying in government and aided schools. Kozhikode (3.6 lakh), Palakkad (3.1 lakh), Kannur and Thrissur (2.8 lakh) in the ranking.
Though Save Public Education campaign had more response in northern districts, these districts are facing acute shortage of higher secondary seats.
41,908 students in Malappuram are still denied higher secondary admission after the main allotment. The figures are staggering in Kozhikode (21708), Palakkad (22752) and Kannur (11901) too.
From Thrissur to Kasargode, around 50,000 students have joined higher secondary education in open scheme.
