Kozhikode: Director general of Police Jacob Thomas on Thursday condemned the police brutality on the locals protesting against the Puthuvype LPG unit in Kochi.

“Lathicharging the protesting locals at Puthuvype was wrong from the part of the police force. The police should be able to consider people as brothers, not enemies,” Thomas said while speaking at a function at a school here.

Asked if his words were aimed at Kochi DCP Yathish Chandra, who manhandled Puthuvype protesters, the DGP said it was not right for any police officer to act like that.

Chandra had courted controversy for his way of dealing with protesters.

The police action had come under severe criticism from veteran CPI-M leader V S Achuthanandan and Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, who demanded the suspension of the DCP.

Police chief T P Senkumar had sought a report from city police commissioner M P Dinesh and Ernakulam rural SP A V George about the police action that happened on Sunday in which several protesters were critically injured.
