Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala health department has sounded an alert over outbreak of cholera with one death reported.

Three confirmed cases of cholera and an equal number of suspected cases have been reported now, an official release said Thursday.

The death due to cholera was reported from Pathanamthitta district. There was every chance of spread of cholera and surveillance activities have been intensifed in the state with focus on high risk areas, the release said.

More than 29,000 dysentery cases have been reported this year.

Field level activities and chlorination of wells are also to be intensified, the release added.

The state is in the grip of viral fever with over 200 deaths being reported due to various types of fever such as H1NI, besides dengue and leptospirosis since January this year.

Breeding of mosquitoes due to piling of waste is considered to be prime reason for the spread of fever and other communicable diseases, according to the release.
