Will leave my entire wealth if proven guilty: Thomas Chandy
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: Transport Minister Thomas Chandy on Monday said he was ready to leave all his wealth if he is proven guilty of encroaching upon backwaters.
Chandy came up with the ‘promise’ while replying to the Opposition members in the Assembly.
While raising the issues faced by KSRTC, Muslim League MLA N A Nellikkunnu taunted Thomas Chandy saying since the minster was busy encroaching upon the backwaters near his tourist resort at Kuttanad, he had no time to look into the affairs of the state-owned road transport corporation.
Amid protests from the treasury bench, a provoked Chandy declared he would give his entire wealth to Nellikkunnu if he is proven guilty of encroaching.
The Assembly witnessed uproar over the issue until the Speaker intervened and calmed down the legislators.
The charges against Chandy, a businessman-turned- politician representing Kuttanad in the assembly, is that he had encroached upon backwaters near his tourist resort at Kuttanad in Alappuzha district.
It was also alleged that he misused his position and constructed a road to his resort using government funds.
Chandy, an NCP nominee in the LDF cabinet, had rejected the charge and stated that he would quit public life if the allegations were proved true.
The Chief Minister had stated that the charges were "politically motivated".
