Muzaffarnagar: Shamli police arrested a woman and her father and registered cases against nine people over the alleged conversion of a 30-year-old man to Islam, officials said on Monday.

Police identified the arrested as Chandni Qureshi and her father, Islam Qureshi. The complaint, filed by medicine trader Devraj Malik, alleges his son Ayush Malik was converted years ago under the pretext of marriage to Chandni. The family said Ayush was taken to Delhi, where a nikah was performed allegedly using forged documents.

Superintendent of Police NP Singh said nine people, including a maulvi, have been booked under sections covering extortion (IPC 308), cheating (IPC 318), forgery (IPC 336, 338), criminal intimidation (IPC 351) and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. Police said efforts are on to trace and arrest the remaining accused.

Meanwhile, Hindu activists, including Swami Yashveer Maharaj, have threatened protests and demanded strict action against those involved.
