West Bengal school headmaster dies after broad-daylight shooting in North Dinajpur

A school headmaster from West Bengal's North Dinajpur district died from his injuries on Saturday afternoon, hours after being shot by unidentified assailants while commuting to work.

The victim, Nazrul Islam, served as the headmaster of a local school in Islampur. The attack occurred on Saturday morning in the Madaripur area as Islam, a resident of nearby Ambagan crossing, was heading to his school. Eyewitnesses reported that unidentified miscreants intercepted him and fired multiple rounds, leaving him collapsed on the road with a bullet wound.

Islam was initially transported to the Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital before being transferred to a advanced medical facility in Siliguri, where he succumbed to his injuries around 1:00 p.m.

Islampur police have launched a detailed investigation into the homicide and are reviewing local CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not yet established a motive for the attack. Eyewitnesses and colleagues noted that Islam had no known political affiliations and was widely regarded as a dedicated educator.

Family members expressed shock over the murder. Islam's wife, Ruksana Khatun, stated that she was speaking with her husband on the phone at the moment he was attacked, noting that he managed to inform her he had been shot before the call ended. His daughter, Naina Khatun, described him as an honest man with no personal disputes, adding that the family remains at a loss as to why he was targeted.
