New Delhi: Delhi Police on Sunday arrested a couple from West Bengal in connection with the killing of Debosmita Paul, an assistant professor at Shivaji College, University of Delhi, whose body was found at her Vasundhara Enclave flat on June 4.

Police said the motive appears to be a property dispute and that the accused travelled from Bengal to Delhi to carry out the crime. Forensic evidence indicates Paul was killed on June 3, a day before her body was discovered.

CCTV footage shows a masked man and woman arriving at the apartment complex in a private cab around 3.20 pm on June 3, entering the building with bags and using the staircase. Investigators say the pair remained inside the flat for nearly half an hour and exited appearing to wear different clothes. There were no visible signs of forced entry, strengthening the theory that Paul may have allowed the visitors in.

Paul, who had been living alone in her sister’s apartment after separating from her husband in 2022, was found by her sister Devarati after repeated calls went unanswered. She discovered Debosmita lying in a pool of blood and alerted police.

Preliminary autopsy and scene examination showed a severe head injury consistent with blows from a heavy object and wounds on the wrist. Further investigations and the accused couple’s custodial questioning are underway.
