West Asia tensions: PM Modi calls ministerial meet to review energy situation
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a high-level meeting with senior ministers on Sunday evening to review the petroleum, power and fertiliser sectors in light of the evolving situation in West Asia, sources said.
The meeting will focus on ensuring uninterrupted supply, stable logistics and efficient distribution across the country, with the government taking proactive steps to maintain stability. Continuous monitoring of global developments to safeguard consumer and industry interests remains a key priority, sources added.
On March 12, Modi had noted that the conflict in West Asia has triggered a global energy crisis, calling it a critical test that requires responding with peace, patience and greater public awareness. He emphasised that the government is working relentlessly to address disruptions in international supply chains.
“Continuous efforts are also underway to determine how we can overcome the disruptions that have occurred in the supply chain,” the Prime Minister said.
The conflict, which began on February 28 with the United States and Israel launching attacks on Iran, has since escalated, with Iran retaliating against Israel and several Gulf nations.
Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s energy supplies pass. Since the conflict intensified, only limited shipping has been allowed through the strait, leading to severe disruptions in global energy supplies, including for India.
Since the outbreak of the conflict, Modi has held telephonic conversations with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, France, Malaysia, Israel and Iran.
