Thanjavur: A shopkeeper in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur has been arrested for practicing untouchability to members of a caste.

A footage of the incident showed a man asking the shopkeeper for petrol which he refused claiming he was banned by villagers from selling it to members of a caste.

A panchayat meeting held on November 28 by the "caste Hindus" decided to ostracise the scheduled caste villagers.

Also, the meeting barred shopkeepers from selling their wares to the members of the caste alongside not allowing them in tea stall and barbershop.

The incident was reported from Kelamangalam village near Papakadu in TN'S Thanjavur district, according to India Today.

Ravikumar, MP for Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, has taken up the matter with the State SC/ST Commission, demanding action against those practising untouchability.

Meanwhile, another video of a shopkeeper refusing to sell groceries to a scheduled caste man also emerged, causing uproar on social media.

Police arrested shop owner Veeramuthu after he was caught on camera practising untouchability and was charged with five Sections including the SC/ST Atrocities Act.
