Uttarkashi: A rescue operation in the Silkyara tunnel of Uttarkashi successfully evacuated all 41 workers who had been trapped underground for 17 days.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami, present at the site, confirmed the completion of the process to insert the pipe through the debris. He expressed hope and readiness for the forthcoming evacuation process, sharing updates and photos on social media platforms, reported ANI.

The evacuation process was meticulously planned. It was estimated that each person will need 15-20 minutes to be brought out. However, the process moved along a lot faster.

Lt General Syed Ata Hasnain (Retired), a National Disaster Management Authority member, highlighted the extensive efforts involving three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), supported by SDRF and paramedics, working toward a safe evacuation.

Amid cautious optimism, the operation's pace is emphasised to ensure the utmost safety of the trapped workers. A team equipped with mattresses, stretchers, and ambulances has been mobilised into the tunnel, to assist in the evacuation.

The rescue strategy, employing manual "rat-hole" mining after machine failure, made substantial progress. Efforts were concentrated on inserting pipes through the debris, ensuring continuous communication with the trapped workers, and supplying essential items, including food, water, and medicines.

Further intensifying the rescue efforts, the Indian Air Force positioned a chopper nearby for immediate transport upon the workers' successful retrieval. Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami reiterated confidence in the operation while closely monitoring the situation.

Families of the trapped workersexpressed relief and hope, emphasising the emotional toll and longing for their loved ones' safe return.
