Fatehpur: A Bajrang Dal office bearer has been detained for allegedly vandalising an old mazar (shrine) in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday.

According to authorities, a group of Bajrang Dal workers, led by Narendra Hindu, allegedly gathered at the shrine on Tuesday evening and damaged the structure using hammers and sticks. The shrine is believed to be several decades old.

A video of the incident, which circulated on social media before being deleted, showed individuals allegedly vandalising the shrine while issuing warnings and references to Bangladesh, police said. The video sparked tensions in the village, with the Muslim community expressing strong resentment.

A senior police official said a heavy force was deployed immediately after receiving information about the incident. Narendra Hindu, identified as the Bhitaura block convenor of the Bajrang Dal, has been taken into custody for questioning.

Police said a thorough investigation is underway, examining all aspects of the case, including the viral video. Authorities have appealed to residents to maintain peace and assured that strict action will be taken against those found responsible. While the situation remains tense, police said it is under control.
