UP cops gun down Anees Khan, an accused in assault of woman constable on train
text_fieldsLucknow: Weeks after the brutal assault on a 40-year-old woman constable aboard the Saryu Express train, the Uttar Pradesh Police have reportedly gunned down the prime accused, identified as Anees Khan, and arrested his two associates in Ayodhya.
The operation took place in the early hours of Friday, resulting in an exchange of gunfire in which a police officer was also injured.
The two arrested individuals, Azad and Vishambhar Dayal Dubey, are currently receiving medical treatment for bullet injuries sustained during the encounter.
Anees Khan, however, managed to escape during the initial confrontation but was located in the Pura Kalandar locality, according to Police. Anish attempted to evade capture by opening fire on the police team, prompting police to return fire, resulting in his demise, said one of the officials.
Superintendent of Police (Ayodhya) Raj Karan Nayyar revealed that a crucial tip-off led to the identification and pursuit of the accused. The victim, who had been assaulted on August 30th, played a pivotal role by providing information that aided in locating Anees Khan.
On the day of the incident, the victim, an on-duty constable, was discovered unconscious and in a "pool of blood" within a general compartment of a train at Ayodhya railway station. She had sustained wounds from a sharp-edged weapon on her face.
The attack came to light when a passenger boarded the train at Ayodhya junction and found the victim beneath a lower berth in an otherwise empty compartment. The passenger alerted the Government Railway Police (GRP).
An FIR was subsequently registered under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code. The Allahabad High Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter, expressing deep concern about the gruesome incident.
The court's order acknowledged the severity of the case and the injuries suffered by the victim, who is referred to as 'X' in the proceedings. However, it should be noted that, at the time, the police had stated that medico-legal and forensic reports had not conclusively confirmed any sexual assault on the victim.
