Jhansi/UP: A woman, mother of two daughters, committed suicide allegedly because she cannot observe Navaratri since she is on her period. Women who are on periods are not allowed to pray on the Navaratri festival, NDTV reported.

The woman, identified as 36-year-old Priyansha Soni, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison.

According to the woman's husband, Mukhesh Soni, she waited for Navratri for a year, and when it was about time, she could neither fast nor worship the goddess because of periods. She was stressed about how everything would happen and who would pray, Mukhesh said and added that he tried to comfort and reason with her and even offered to do the rituals on her behalf, but she was sad.

According to him, his efforts to comfort her, explaining that periods are a natural process and monthly occurrence, went in vain.

The husband said that soon after he left for work, the woman started to cry and asked him to return home and comfort her, and he did. But after he left for work for the second time, she consumed poison and was rushed to hospital, he said.

Later, she was discharged and was taken to meet her parents as the husband hoped a change of place would make her feel better. However, her health deteriorated again, and she was admitted to the hospital. She complained of back pain and kept vomiting, the husband said.

He said that she died the next day.

Their daughters are 2 years and 3 years old only.
