Tripura police books UAPA against 68 Twitter handles

Tripura police books 68 Twitter accounts under stringent terror law, UAPA, reports NDTV. In a letter the police have also sent Twitter's grievance officer at his official address in California, United States, saying that that the mentioned accounts were used to post objectionable contents regarding the alleged vandalism of Mosques in the state.

The Police demanded to suspend 68 Twitter profiles that allegedly spread distorted and objectionable content regarding recent violence in the state. The police cited the link of the 68 profiles in their letter dated November 3 and added that profiles were booked under stringent UAPA. NDTV claims to have a copy of the letter.

The police letter states that some of the news items the profiles posted contain photographs and videos of other incidents. Also, there were fabricated statements or commentary for promoting enmity between religious sections in the presence of a criminal conspiracy. The letter says that the posts have the potential to spark communal tension in the state, which could end in communal riots.

The police further sought a list of IP addresses where the user logged into accounts as well as mobile numbers added to Twitter accounts.

Post the communal riots in Bangladesh, which took at least seven lives, Muslims in Tripura that borders the country had alleged that they had come under attacks. Though the Bangladesh administration contained the clashes, it had spilt over India, particularly in Tripura. The Jamiat Ulama in the state had told media on Sunday that there have been no less than 15 incidents of attacks that happened in their religious places or individuals.

Few media and authorities are creating confusion regarding attacks over them, Tripura Jamiat Ulama president Mufti Taybur said. But they had informed the authorities accordingly, he added.
