A Trinamool Congress leader, Krishnapada Mondal, was critically injured after being shot at close range in broad daylight on Saturday in Nodakhali, South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal.

Mondal was attacked while riding his motorcycle, with eyewitnesses reporting that three unidentified assailants, believed to be outsiders, fired at him from close range before fleeing the scene. He was rushed to a Kolkata hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The police have launched an investigation to determine whether the attack was politically or personally motivated. Local police stations have been alerted about the suspects. Some residents speculate that internal conflicts within the ruling party may have contributed to the attack.

Nodakhali is part of the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

This incident marks the third such attack on a Trinamool Congress leader in January. Earlier this month, councillor Dulal Sakar, also known as Babla, from English Bazar Municipality in Malda district, was shot dead in a similar manner. Police investigations revealed infighting within the party, leading to the arrest of Narendra Nath Tiwari, the district’s Trinamool twin president, as the mastermind behind Sakar’s assassination.

On January 14, another Trinamool leader, Hasan Sheikh, was fatally shot during an administrative program in Kaliachak, Malda district.
