TMC to move motion against Waqf Amendment Bill in Bengal Assembly
text_fieldsKolkata: Trinamool Congress is set to move a motion in the West Bengal Assembly on Monday, opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill currently under review by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to participate in the motion debate, which will be discussed on the sixth day of the ongoing winter session, running until December 10.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has urged BJP members to be present and actively participate in the debate when the motion is moved.
Trinamool Congress has outlined two primary objections to the Bill. The first concerns the proposal to assign District Magistrates the task of surveying existing Waqf properties, which the party describes as an unacceptable form of “bureaucratisation.” The second objection is the plan to take over assets verbally declared as Waqf properties, which Trinamool sees as a move rooted in "divisive politics" by the ruling party at the Centre.
Last week, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the Bill in the House, stating it would destabilize the Waqf system. “This Bill is against one particular religion and undermines the basic spirit of equality and the right to practice any religion. That is why we are opposing it,” she said.
Additionally, the Assembly session on Monday will include the oath-taking ceremony of six Trinamool legislators elected in last month’s bypolls. Governor C.V. Ananda Bose will administer the oath, raising speculation about potential interactions between the Governor and the Chief Minister within the Assembly.
