Two terrorists were cornered near Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district and they fired at civilians in an attempt to escape. The Army and police are searching for them together.

A defence spokesperson said the joint operation was launched at 8.30 PM on Monday after receiving information that terrorists are hiding in Pandoshan, 4 km southeast of Chaudhary Gund in Shopian.

While the security team was conducting the cordon-and-search operation, terrorists started firing in all directions. "They were trying to break through the cordon and put civilian lives at risk".

"With complete disregard to their own safety, the security forces were successful in evacuating a majority of the civilians to a safe location," added the Army spokesperson. The terrorists managed to escape under the cover of darkness and security Forces have intensified the search operations.

The army started civilian extrication from the operation site. The spokesperson said the terrorists sensed being cornered and fired at civilians to create chaos. "Sensing grave threat to the lives of civilians, the army started extrication despite being heavily fired upon".

A soldier Lance Naik Sanjib Das and two civilians, Shahid Gani Dar and Suhaib Ahmad were injured by gunshots. All three were taken to 92 Base Hospital in an Army helicopter. One of the civilians died during the treatment.

An encounter was reported between terrorists and security forces in the Anantnag district as well.

A day ago, Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested a hybrid terrorist and recovered pistol and pistol magazines from him. Joint forces of Baramulla Police, Army 52 RR, 53 Bn CRPF & 2nd Bn SSB established routine MVCP near Juhama crossing Baramulla, said the area police chief.
