In recognition of his efforts to promote communal harmony through fact-checking and responsible reporting, Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of Alt News, has been conferred with the Kottai Ameer Communal Harmony Award by the Tamil Nadu government for the year 2024.

Zubair, a native of Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu, has been an advocate for truth in the face of misinformation. His dedication to combatting fake news and preventing potential violence in society has earned him this esteemed accolade.

The award comes as a testament to Zubair's unwavering commitment, particularly highlighted by his recent fact-checking endeavour. In March 2023, amidst escalating tensions fuelled by a viral video falsely claiming migrant workers were under attack in Tamil Nadu, Zubair’s report debunked the misinformation, revealing that the footage was not from Tamil Nadu.

His action not only dispelled falsehoods but also averted potential unrest based on caste, religion, race, and language.

Despite facing challenges, including unwarranted legal scrutiny, Zubair's resolve remained unshaken. In June 2022, he was unjustly arrested over frivolous charges, only to be rearrested on subsequent occasions. However, he persevered in his mission, eventually securing bail in July 2022.

The 'Kottai Ameer Communal Harmony Award, 2024' pays tribute to Zubair's remarkable contributions in fostering a more informed and harmonious society. Through his platform, Alt News, he continues to exemplify the power of truth in countering divisive narratives and promoting unity among communities.
