Chennai: Tamil cinema's superstar, Vijay, has officially launched his political party in Tamil Nadu, taking the helm as the leader of the Tamizha Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).

The move positions Vijay as a potential contender in the state's upcoming assembly elections in 2026.

The newly-formed political entity, named "Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam," translates to "Tamil Nadu Victory Party." In his announcement, Vijay clarified that his party would not participate in the Lok Sabha elections, and TVK would maintain a neutral stance, refraining from supporting any other political entity.

Vijay expressed his commitment to both his ongoing film commitments and active engagement in public service through politics.

He emphasised his gratitude towards the people of Tamil Nadu and stated, "I consider this as my gratitude towards the people of Tamil Nadu." The announcement was met with spontaneous celebrations by his fans, reflecting the trend of stars transitioning from cinema to politics in the state, as witnessed with the late MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.

Regarded as the next Rajinikanth in Tamil cinema, Vijay has harbored political aspirations for over a decade. Actively involving his fan clubs in various charitable and welfare initiatives, he has contributed to causes such as free food distribution, educational scholarships, libraries, evening tuition, and legal assistance.

Vijay's recent recognition of student achievements in public exams further highlighted his interest in encouraging educational pursuits. He conveyed to students his desire to "read about leaders like Ambedkar, Periyar, Kamaraj, take what's good and leave the rest."

Vijay's father, Chandrasekhar, is a renowned film director, and Vijay, with 68 films to his credit, has garnered a cult following. Some of his films have delved into sensitive and significant public interest issues, often taking controversial stances against governments over the years.
