Talks to reopen Indo-Myanmar trade routes underway

NEW DELHI: Bilateral talks to open three border crossings between India and Myanmar are in progress. These routes have been closed since the beginning of the covid outbreak. As the pandemic situation is now improving, these three borders will soon resume trading.
The three main trading camps along the Indo-Myanmar border are the Tamu Trading Camps, the Reed Trading Camps and the Thani Thalang Camps. Sources said they were waiting for the reopening of the Tamu border gate as it was widely used for cross-border trade with India.
"The value of trade from Tamu Camp is close to $90 million. Trade had resumed partially but the volume and value dropped by half after India closed trade through the border in March 2020 following the outbreak of the pandemic," say sources, NIE reported.
Agricultural products like betel nuts, pepper, beans and pulses and garlic from Myanmar to India. Whereas India's exports include motorbikes and spare parts, cotton, wheat, chemical fertilizer and plastic raw materials. The other area from where trade is likely to reopen is the Reed Trading Camp. "The Reed Trading camp is prone to attacks by the armed organisations."
