New Delhi: Former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik has been granted a respite as the Supreme Court approves a two-month interim bail on medical grounds.

The prominent leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had been apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in February 2022 for his alleged involvement in a high-profile money laundering case connected to fugitive terrorist Dawood Ibrahim.

Malik had grabbed headlines previously for criticizing the actions of Sameer Wankhede, the former zonal director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), after a significant drug raid on a cruise ship off Mumbai's coast in October 2021.

This operation had also led to the arrest of Malik's son-in-law, Sameer Khan.

Despite the Bombay High Court's earlier denial of bail, citing access to specialized medical care, Malik's legal team persistently argued his deteriorating health due to stage 2 to stage 3 chronic kidney disease, leading to the Supreme Court's recent decision.
