Stalin sets stage for fight with Centre passing resolution against Hindi imposition

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly today passed a resolution against the Centre's decision to make the Hindi language a medium of instruction in all central educational institutions.

Moving the resolution in the Assembly, Chief Minister MK Stalin urged the Union government to renounce its decision to implement the recommendations made in the Parliamentary Committee Report on Official Language.

As the discussion over the resolution went on, BJP MLAs staged a walkout of the House protesting against the resolution.

The Chief Minister said the recommendations amount to giving prominence to a language over other languages and are against the interest of the people who speak those languages.

Earlier, in a series of tweets, CM Stalin strongly condemned the Centre's 'aggressive attempt' to impose Hindi in all possible ways and reminded the Centre that it would jeopardise the federal structure of the country.

In a tweet on Sunday, he also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi "to take stock of the reasonable fear and discontent among the non-Hindi..." He argued that "such impractical, divisive attempts will put non-Hindi states people in a disadvantageous position and jeopardise the spirit of the union-state relations."
