Sonia Gandhi to chair 'compromise' meeting with Congress dissidents
text_fieldsOn Saturday, party president Sonia Gandhi will hold a compromise meeting with controversial Congress leaders who have written letters demanding greater and more active leadership from the Gandhi scions.
Sonia Gandhi will be met by members of the 'rebel group' who have demanded a complete overhaul of the Congress, including a change of leadership. The meeting arranged, following the intervention of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath.
The latest development comes after indications that Kamal Nath may step in to fill the vacancy created by the death of Ahmed Patel, forging stronger ties with the Nehru-Gandhi family and the party, along with gaining the post of treasurer. He had earlier expressed a desire to quit active politics.
Reports suggest that Kamal Nath had informed Sonia Gandhi that it would be harmful to replace prominent leaders by portraying them as dissidents for suggesting changes. Before leaving for Goa, the Congress president had formed an advisory committee comprising many of the 'rebels' in question.
Rahul Gandhi will also attend the meeting scheduled for Saturday. The 23 Congress leaders who wrote the letter will not attend the meeting.
