A 44-year-old shopkeeper was assaulted by a mob near Delhi University’s North Campus on Wednesday after being accused of selling cow meat, police sources told The Indian Express.

The incident followed a complaint from a 15-year-old boy who alleged that he had purchased meat from the “North East Store,” a grocery shop located in Vijay Nagar, Model Town area. The shop is owned by Chaman Kumar, a resident of North Delhi’s Burari.

According to police, members of the public, suspecting the sale of cow meat, physically manhandled the shopkeeper. Medical assistance was provided to Kumar, and his medical examination is currently ongoing.

Authorities have seized meat samples from the shop, which have been sent for forensic analysis to determine if the meat is indeed cow meat.

Videos circulating on social media show the mob chanting slogans such as “those who kill cows should be shot,” intensifying concerns over communal tensions.

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), condemned the attack, stating that the mob, which targeted the shopkeeper from the North East, also threatened to raid the homes of students from minority communities.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Bhisham Singh said the situation has been brought under control. He added, “Once the forensic report and full enquiry are complete, appropriate legal action will be taken as per the findings and provisions of law,” as reported by The Indian Express.
