Sharjeel Imam to surrender at Tihar Jail as interim bail expires
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Activist Sharjeel Imam, accused in the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, will surrender at Tihar Jail on Monday as his 10-day interim bail ends.
Granted by Karkardooma Court from March 20 to 30 on family grounds—to attend his younger brother's wedding and care for his ailing mother—Imam left his native Kako village in Bihar's Jehanabad district this morning. He is expected in Delhi by evening to comply with the court's order, which barred media interactions and social media use.
His brother, Mujammil Imam, told IANS: “He was granted an eleven-day parole, and today is the last day. He has to surrender by the evening. It was a very short span, and it hurts that it has come to an end, but it was a good time he spent with family and friends. I hope he will get bail in the near future and return to us.”
In custody for over five years, Imam faces charges in the February 2020 riots case, which killed 53 and injured over 700 amid anti-CAA protests. Delhi Police allege he mobilized and radicalized crowds by blocking key roads and disrupting services.
His surrender closes a brief family reunion amid ongoing legal battles.
