September 15 is final deadline to file ITR, clarifies IT Department
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Income Tax Department has confirmed that the last date for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025-26 is September 15, dismissing social media claims of an extension till September 30.
In a late-night post on X on September 14, the department labelled as “fake” the circulating message about an extension and urged taxpayers to rely only on official updates from @IncomeTaxIndia. “The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025,” it said.
The clarification comes amid complaints on social media from taxpayers and chartered accountants about glitches in the I-T portal, particularly while making payments or downloading the Annual Information Statement (AIS). Responding to these posts, the department maintained that the portal was functioning smoothly and advised users to clear their browser cache or try alternative browsers.
It also asked those facing issues with uploading ITRs or payments to share details, including PAN and mobile number, at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in. For AIS/TIS-related problems, users were asked to mail their details to cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in.
The department added that its 24×7 helpdesk is assisting taxpayers through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions and social media support.
On September 13, it said over six crore returns had already been filed. Earlier in May, the government had extended the filing deadline for individuals, HUFs and non-audited entities from July 31 to September 15, citing structural changes in the return forms and updates required in the e-filing system.
ITR filings have shown steady growth, with a record 7.28 crore returns filed for AY 2024-25 by July 31, 2024, up from 6.77 crore in AY 2023-24, marking a 7.5 per cent rise.
