Mangaluru: M.K. Faizy, currently in jail following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Delhi in March 2025, was re-elected as the national president of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) at the party’s two-day sixth national representative council meeting, which concluded on Wednesday in Mangaluru.

Faizy was arrested by the ED on money-laundering charges in connection with a case against the banned Muslim organisation, Popular Front of India (PFI). SDPI has described the allegations as a politically motivated witch-hunt.

Former Rajya Sabha member and Vice-President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Obaidullah Khan Azmi, served as the Election Officer for the proceedings.

Mohammad Shafi, the acting national president of the party, said the council resolved that Faizy’s arrest is “undemocratic” and an attempt to suppress the voices of minorities, marginalised communities, farmers, and members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

The council also passed a resolution alleging that the Union government is misusing its official machinery, including the NIA, CBI, and ED, and is even exploiting the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against political opponents.

During the meeting, SDPI also announced the launch of its youth wing, Young Democrats.
