The Supreme Court announced on Tuesday that it will issue an order directing Wikipedia to remove the name, photographs. and video clips of the deceased victim in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case in West Bengal.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court described the relavations in the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) status reports as "disturbing" during the hearing of the suo motu case regarding the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

"We will pass an order because her name and photographs cannot be revealed," said the apex court.

Solitor General Tushar Mehta informed a bench led by Chief Justice D.Y Chandrachud that, despite previous directives, the victim's name and photo remained in Wikipedia. The bench, also comprising Justices J.B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, emphasized that all social media platforms must remove the victim's identity and related photographs.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, noted that the Wikipedia had not complied with the order. Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy added that Wikipedia had refused to take down the content, citing a stance against cencorship. . However, SG Mehta argued that this was not a case of cencorship but a legal mendate to prevent the disclosure of the victim's identity.

The West Bengal Police reported filing 50 FIRs and confirmed that photographs had been circulated before law enforcement reached the crime scene.
