SC flags concerns over economically weaker students' education
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Supreme Court said that the digital divide caused by the pandemic has "start consequences" for children belonging to the disadvantaged group (DG) and economically weaker sections (EWS). The court noted that the right to education was denied to these children because their families could not afford computer-based equipment and access to the internet.
The apex court said that the Union and state government should come up with a realistic plan for children of these sections if Right to Education (RTE) is to become a reality, reported The News Minute.
The bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud was addressing a petition filed by the Action Committee Unaided Recognised Private Schools. The petitioner challenged a Delhi High Court order from a year ago which directed private and government schools to provide digital devices and internet packages to underprivileged children. The plea asked for the funding needed for it.
The court has asked the union and state governments to work together for the purposes of funding to develop a realistic and lasting solution to ensure children have the resources to access education.
Schools are using online classes to impart education. Students receive homework online and need to upload it too. If children are unable to do so, it will be a complete disparity. "The needs of young children who are the future of the country cannot be ignored," said the judge.
