New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha witnessed the Leader of Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar, exchanging barbs over the discussion on Manipur violence. While Chairman Dhankhar agreed to have a discussion, Kharge reiterated the demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's presence in the House, leading to a heated debate between the two.

The Leader of Opposition expressed his concern over the Chairman not heeding his requests for PM Modi's presence in the House, prompting Kharge to accuse the Chairman of defending the Prime Minister excessively. In response, Chairman Dhankhar clarified that as the Chairman of the House, he was not defending anyone; rather, it was the global platforms like the US Senate that recognize PM Modi, and every Indian should be proud of it.

Despite Dhankhar's claim of not being political while sitting on a Constitutional chair, he hailed Prime Minister Modi, suggesting unstoppable progress in the country under his leadership, and alleged that Kharge was shirking that reality.

Kharge suggested that the House be adjourned until 1 pm to accommodate the Prime Minister's presence, but Dhankhar refused to direct the PM to attend. This led to Kharge accusing the Chairman of defending the Prime Minister excessively. Dhankhar, in response, asserted that he did not need to defend anyone but rather was focused on upholding the Constitution and defending the rights of the people.

The disagreement continued as Kharge remarked that the Chairman's refusal to allow a discussion under rule 267 may have been due to his anger. In a light-hearted exchange, Dhankhar humorously denied being an angry person in his long 45 years of successful marriage.

Despite the friendly banter, tensions remained high in the House as the issue of the Prime Minister's absence continued to dominate the discussion. Dhankhar maintained that it was the Prime Minister's prerogative, like any other MP, to decide whether to attend the session.

The clash between the Leader of Opposition and the Chairman reflected the broader political divide on the subject of the Manipur violence. As the debate unfolded, both sides held firm on their positions, with the Opposition seeking the Prime Minister's presence for the discussion and the Chairman defending the PM's choice while emphasizing the country's progress and unity.
