Hajipur: Three men chased a local leader of RJD in Bihar’s Hajipur to his home all the way from the street and shot him dead, NDTV reported.

Pankaj Rai, who is a local councillor and member of Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), was at a clothing shop near his house when the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and started firing indiscriminately.

The first-time elected councillor ran into his house to save himself but the attackers followed him into the house.

It is reported that he was struck three times; his family and neighours rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead on the arrival.

Following the shocking murder, RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav came down heavily on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

"NDA goons led by Nitish Kumar shot dead ward councillor Pankaj Rai in Hajipur at night. The Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers are sleeping peacefully while their goons are creating mayhem," Yadav was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, it is reported citing police that Raj had filed a complaint over a dispute six months before.

His family now reportedly said that no action was taken over his complaint.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Har Kishore Rai visited the crime scene and the hospital to collect details.

The CCTV footage in the area are being scanned to track down the suspects.
