New Delhi: Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, has been named the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the BJP’s return to power in the national capital after 26 years.

Following the announcement, Gupta expressed her commitment to working with honesty, integrity, and dedication for the development and empowerment of all Delhi citizens.

Chosen as the Leader of the House during the BJP legislature party meeting, Gupta will be sworn in as Delhi’s Chief Minister at a ceremony at Ramlila Ground tomorrow. The meeting, where her selection was finalised, was attended by all 48 newly elected BJP MLAs, along with central observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and OP Dhankar.

Following the announcement, Gupta thanked the BJP’s central leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and her party colleagues for entrusting her with the role.

At 50 years old, she will become Delhi’s fourth female Chief Minister, following Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress), and Atishi (AAP).

In a post on social media platform X, she wrote, "I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership for placing their trust in me and giving me this responsibility."

Several key figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, are expected to attend her swearing-in ceremony.

Gupta secured her assembly seat in the February 5 elections, defeating AAP candidate Bandna Kumari by a margin of over 29,000 votes.

The BJP’s victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections ended Aam Aadmi Party’s rule, with the party winning 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP secured 22 seats.
