New Delhi: Following a scathing attack by the Prime Minister on Opposition parties, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has launched a salvo of her own, asking why the PM was criticising the Opposition for having worsened the Covid-19 pandemic when he had held massive rallies at the height of the second wave of the pandemic.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had accused the Opposition of having fuelling the migrant exodus from major cities during the lockdown and trek back to their villages, possibly contributing to the spread of the virus to rural areas in the first phase of the crisis.

"People whom he had deserted, who had no way of returning to their homes, who were coming back on foot - did he want that nobody should help them? What did Modi ji want? What does he want? What about the big rallies he did?" as per an ANI report. "What about the big rallies he did?" she remarked while alleging that PM Modi conducted rallies, despite an evident surge in the country during the second wave of Covid-19 last year.

The PM made his address in the Lok Sabha during the Budget session when he was criticised for the government's handling of the Covid-19 situation.

"Congress crossed all limits during the first wave of Covid... when the WHO was advising everyone to stay wherever they are, Congress went to the Mumbai railway station to scare innocent people. They pushed labourers to go back to their states. As a result, Covid spread rapidly in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand," he said, stating that it was the Congress which had pushed migrants into crisis.

The Congress had not learned from successive defeats at the polls and their arrogance was showing, the OM claimed. He also alleged that the Congress was at the forefront of the "tukde tukde" gang.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Monday had criticised the OM for shifting blame to the Opposition when he could have apologised for pandemic mismanagement.

"Lakhs of people have lost their loved ones due to the incompetence of the government, but today their pain was shamelessly laughed at in Parliament," he tweeted.
