Rahul Gandhi criticises Centre over LPG price hike, Says Two cylinders then for the price of one now

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi compared the price of LPG during the Modi regime and UPA's tenure to point out people are used to getting two cylinders for the price of one now. His criticism comes a day after the price of cooking gas was hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder. This is the second such move in a month.

Rahu Gandhi tweeted that the core of Congress' economic policy was the welfare of the poor and middle-class Indian families. During the UPA regime, an LPG cylinder was Rs 410 with a subsidy of Rs 827. Now there is no subsidy and a cylinder costs Rs 999.

He noted that millions of Indian households are waging a difficult battle against extreme inflation, unemployment, and poor governance.

The price of LPG is being linked to the supply concerns caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In the last year, domestic LPG prices have been hiked by nearly Rs 200. On 1 May 2021, the price of a 14.2kg domestic LPG cylinder was Rs 809, says the Indian Oil Corporation site. Prices have been hiked six times since then.

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has caused a disruption in the global supply chain that has increased the prices of crude oil and other commodities. Crude oil prices had mostly been on rising in March. Oil companies in India are passing on the high import cost of global crude oil prices by hiking domestic petrol and diesel prices. In March, inflation in crude petroleum spiked to 83.56% from 55.17%.
