Rahul Gandhi accuses Modi government of ‘destroying’ Tata Group
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Narendra Modi government of undermining the Tata Group, raising questions over the Centre’s role amid an ongoing dispute over the conglomerate’s leadership and future ownership structure.
Gandhi criticised the silence of India’s business community and alleged that the government was treating private enterprises as though they were under its control. He also vowed that the Congress would pursue accountability, though he did not specify the actions he was referring to.
His remarks came amid a disagreement within Tata Sons, the group’s holding company, over the reappointment of N. Chandrasekaran as executive chairman and whether the company should be listed on the stock market.
Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, has challenged the board resolution reappointing Chandrasekaran for another five-year term, alleging procedural lapses. He has questioned why the meeting agenda did not mention the reappointment and sought access to the meeting records.
Tata Trusts, which holds a 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons, has also opposed a public listing, arguing that the group’s existing model should be preserved.
The listing debate follows a directive from the Reserve Bank of India concerning financial transparency and corporate governance. The Tata Group has not publicly responded to Gandhi’s allegations.
